The Sacrifice on Hajj Day

Hajj Guide by Editorial Staff (June 12, 09:38 PM)

Muslims engaged in the Hajj (pilgrimage) are obligated to sacrifice a lamb or a goat or join others in sacrificing a cow or a camel during the celebration of the Eid al-Adha.

So, after stoning the Jamarah, you have to slaughter the animal in remembrance of Prophet Ibrahim A.S when he was asked to sacrifice his son ‘Prophet Ismael A.S, then Allah replace the animal from Hazrat Ismael A.S. after examining the purity of Imaan and submission to Allah Subhana Wa Ta’ala of Hazrat Ibrahim A.S.

So following Prophet Muhammad SAAW’s Sunnah, Pilgrims are to sacrifice animal in remembrance of Hazrat Ibrahim A.S during Hajj, because Rasool Allah SAAW commanded us to take the rituals of Hajj (Manasik Hajj) from Him SAAW.

Thus, you as pilgrim have to reach the place of sacrifice in Mina and sacrifice your animal - and that is what the Sunnah is. However, you are allowed to slaughter your animal any other part of Mina or Mecca by making the animal face to Qiblah, and making it lie down on its left side and putting his right foot upon its right side when slaughtering, as the Prophet SAAW said,

“I have slaughtered here and all of Mina is a place for slaughtering, and all of the mountain pass approaches, so slaughter on your place of stopping”

While slaughtering the animal, you are to say,

Bismillahi Wallahu Akbar Al-Lahumma Inna Hadha Minka Wa Laka [82] Al Lahumma Taqabbal Minni

“In the name of Allah and Allah is greater. O Allah this is from You and for You. O Allah accept it from me”

Yawm an-Nahr are four, i.e. the days of slaughtering the animals are four days of ‘Eid, and it’s also called, Yawm al-Hajj al-Akbar (The Day of the greatest Hajj), as Prophet Muhammad SAAW said,

“All the days of Tashriq are for sacrifice”

You can slaughter cow, camel, sheep and goat etc. You are also allowed to eat something from the animal you slaughtered as Rasool Allah SAAW did. And Allah says in Quran,

The sacrificial camels We have made for you as among the Symbols from Allah: in them is (much) good for you: then pronounce the name of Allah over them as they line up (for sacrifice): when they are down on their side (after slaughter), eat ye thereof, and feed such as (beg not you) live in contentment and such as beg with due humility.
[Noble Quran 22:36]

One thing must be notify, it is not compulsory on you to slaughter your animal by your own during the hajj, you can also just pay there for your animal and administration will automatically sacrifice the animal in your name as practically, it is really difficult for anyone to find the animal, then to sacrifice due to a great crowed and rush of pilgrim in million.

However, if you can even pay for the animal, or for any due reason you become unable to sacrifice the animal, you can then fast three days in Hajj and seven when he returns to his family.

Different hajj packages providing companies, traveling agencies and tour operators also provide the facility of slaughtering. You can get more details regarding hajj traveling agencies providing packages from here, or by directly contacting the relevant traveling agency on given contact way. If you have any question regarding slaughtering the animal on hajj day, you can ask frankly.
