Before explaining the significance, implication and importance of Qiyamul lail in the life of Muslim, we like to define the role of ibadah (Ritual) in Islamic context.

There are mainly five rituals defined by Islam as obligatory, Salah, Saom, Hajj, Zakah and Jihad. As our topic requires, we would only take Salat (Nimaz, Prayer) here. Salah has an ability to affect Muslims heart spiritually very effectively. Muslims has to prayer five time salat namely Fajr Dhor, Asr, maghrib and Isha. All these regularly daily prayers enhance person’s spirituality do to something in the way of Allah SWT. As Prophet Muhammad SAWW said in a Hadeeth reported by Imam Muslim,

“The closest a slave can be to his Lord is when he prostrates (in Sujud).

In short, Prayers create the feeling of close relationship with the creator (Allah) hence creates the feeling of spirituality, and hence creates a spirit of doing something in the way of Allah Subhana Wa Ta’ala which HE requires from a Muslim to do so.

Thus, those Muslims who are found of obeying Allah Subhana Wa Ta’ala want them to be spiritual all the time by taking even those prayer under their account which are not obligatory, such as Qiyamullail. Especially those Mulsims who are to do hard in the way of Allah, Allah Subhana Wa Ta’ala recommends them to stand in the way of Allah at nights so that they could get the energy of doing something hard at day and stand firm in the way of Allah Subhana Wa Ta’ala as Prophet SAWW and his Sahaba R.A used to do so. As Sayyidatuna Aishah r.a. said in a Hadeeth authenticated by Imam(s) Al-Bukhari and Muslim that,

“Rasulullah s.a.w. kept standing in Qiyamillail so long, that the skin of his feet would crack. I asked him: “Why do you do this, while you have been forgiven of your former and latter sins?” He said, “Should I not be a grateful slave of Allah?”

Imagine, if Prophet Muhammad SAWW need to stand at nights praying regularly to stand firm in from of Kufar at day, what are we to excuse from Qiyamul lail. The Prophet SAWW whom his former and later sins were forgiven, but stands all the night.

So we cannot say we need not need energy to stand firm in the way of Allah Subhana Wa Ta’ala when Prophet Muhammad SAWW used to do so and his Sahana R.A. Rasulullah s.a.w. said in a Hadeeth narrated by Sayyidina Jabir r.a., authenticated by Imam Muslim,

“Every night there is a special time during which whatever a Muslim asks Allah of any good, relating to this life or the Hereafter, it will be granted to him; and this moment comes every night.”

In another Hadith, Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah r.a. narrated a Hadeeth which was reported by Imam Al-Bukhari and Muslim, that Rasulullah, s.a.w. said,

“Our Lord descends every night to the lowest heaven when the last third of the night remains, and He says, ‘Who will call Me that I might answer him, who will ask of Me that I might give him, who will ask My forgiveness, that I might forgive him?”

And Amr Ibn ‘Anbasah r.a. related a Hadeeth which was reported by Imam Abu Dawud,

“The closest Allah gets closer to the servant is in the mid of the night. So if you are to be among those who remember Allah at that time, then try to do so.

Thus, Muslims must not take Qiyam ul layl as light or something neglectable because it’s not obligatory, but Muslims must take qiyam ul layl seriously as in the way of Allah qiyam ul layl plays significant role, and the implications of qiyam ul layl create very serious consequences.  Once Rasulullah SAWW was asked in a Hadeeth narrated by Abu Umamah, and reported by Imam Al-Tirmizhi,

“O Rasulallah, which du’a is heard (answered) most?” He said: “In the last third of the night, and following (at the end of) the prescribed prayers.”

May Allah make the importance, significance and implication of Qiyamullail clear in our mind and let us the chance to regulate our prayers at night regularly, amen!
