What Is Hajj in Islam?

Hadj is the pilgrimage to Mecca, which every sane and adult Muslim male or female is supposed to make at least once in his/her life if affordable physically or financially. In other words, hadj or sometime pronounced as the Hajj is an obligatory ritual on every sane and adult Muslim.

Muslim from around the world be it Islamic countries or non-Islamic, gather in millions to perform this obligation i.e. hadj to remember the actions (Sunnah) of Prophet Ibrahim (A.S) under the guidance of Prophet Muhammad Sallallah-o-Alaih-e-Wasallim.

Allah (SWT) tells us about Hajj in the Quran, He says:

For Hajj are the months well known!  If anyone undertakes that duty therein let there be no obscenity or wickedness nor wrangling in the Hajj.  And whatever good you do Allah knows it.  And take a provision for the journey but the best of provisions is right conduct.  So fear Me. O Men of understanding.
[TMQ Al-Baqarah: 197]

Hadj (The Hajj) vanishes the sins of the Muslim just like he/she had never been in it. Abu Huraira (R.A) narrated that the Prophet (saw) said, "Whoever performs Hajj for Allah's pleasure and does not have sexual relations with his wife, and does not do evil or sins then he will return as if he were born anew." [Bukhari, Volume 2, Book 26, Number 596]

From the above given verses and the traditions from the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) it has been clear that the Hadj is not only the duty which is obligatory on every Muslim but also the way to purify oneself from the sin that had been occurred.

In next coming article we will like to describe the objective behind the Hadj made by Islam for Muslims around the world. In short, what we are doing and what should we do with respect to hadj.
