Islam Beliefs by Editorial Staff (November 13, 01:03 AM)

Before me get know the way of becoming a Muslim, we must be clear what Islam is and who are the people called Muslims, because the question comprehend the method of converting to Islam and the definition of a Muslim as well.

What is Islam?
Islam is defined as a religion which was revealed on Prophet Muhammad SAWW in the shape of the book called Quran and the Sunnah (The way of Prophet) to manage the life of people and the relationship with the creator, with other people and with themselves.

Literally Islam means “submission” to the commands of Allah SWT. Some scholars also mean it in “peace.” However, according to what Islam believes, Islam is not a new religion which was sent only on the Prophet Muhammad SAWW, but a truth that Allah SWT kept sending on His Prophets and Messenger before Prophet Muhammad SAWW such as Prophet Adam, Nooh, Ibrahim, Is’haq, Isma’el, Dawood, Musa and the Prophet Isa (Jesus) may Allah peace be upon them all. And Prophet Muhammad SAWW is the final Prophet and Messenger of Allah SWT for all universes.

Who Are Muslim?
Literally Muslim means “the one who submits” to Allah Subhana Wa Ta’ala. You can define a Muslim is a person who follows Islam i.e. who submits his will to the Allah SWT. Mostly the word Muslim is referred to male and female both, but culturally the word ‘Muslimah’ is used for the female who follow Islam.

Becoming A Muslim
When you say what makes person a Muslim that have two meanings.

  1. Who is practicing Muslim

  2. What is the Method to convert to Islam

The one who practices Islam and follows the commands of Allah SWT from Quran and the Sunnah with having firm believe that Allah is the only deity and the Prophet Muhammad SAWW is the final Messenger of Allah SWT including Islam is the only truth, is a Muslim in the frame of Allah SWT whether he/she discloses the faith in this world or not.

As for method to revert into Islam, is just testifying the Shahada as,
    lā ʾilāha ʾillā-llāh, muhammadun rasÅ«lu-llāh
There is no god but God, Muhammad is the messenger of God.

When one gives this testimony he/she is a Muslim whether it is testify in publicly or privately. However, in case you testify the Shahada publically, you’ll be considered the member of Islamic society as a Muslim.

However, some legal procedure may require registering yourself as Muslim to gain the benefits of Muslims according to the country you live in.
