Hajj Dictionary Meaning

Hajj is a pilgrimage towards Mecca located in Saudi Arabia. The Arabic meaning of the word hajj in ancient times refers to "to go" this also called as the dictionary meaning of hajj in that time.

New Definition

But after the advent of Islam, the definition of hajj changes and now it becomes the latest definition of Islam. According to new definition of hajj with Islamic perspective the hajj is the pilgrimage to Mecca with performance of certain rituals on the places both pointed out by Allah.

The word hajj now rarely used in any other meaning or above stated ancient meanings, hajj is also known as fifth pillar of Islam.

Introducing The Term Hajj

The pillars of Islam in chronological order is set as, Toheed (believing that god is one and Muhammad is his last messenger), Salat (Prayers), Sawm (Fasting), Zakat (a Type of Tax) and at last hajj.

The rituals which must be performed according to the definition of hajj are going here to be discussed, Tawaf (walking around Qabba anticlockwise seven times), Sa’ee (running between the hills of Safa and Marwah seven times), going to Arafat, stoning on Jamarat at Mina and much more to do.

All the rituals are done in the dates of dhul-al-Hijjah which is last month of Islamic calendar. The dates in which hajj is carried out starts from 8^th of dhul-al-hijjah and ends on 12^th of dhul-al-hijjah, hajj is only an obligatory task for the Muslims who can afford this.
