five pillars of Islam

You can clearly find evidences regarding five pillars of Islam from Quran and the Sunnah. The five pillars of Islam are Shahadah, Salah, Zakah, Hajj and Sawm. These are the five pillars of Islam which privide foundation to establish the other commands of Deen on these basis.

The manifestation of these Arabic word of five pillars can be illustrated by reported the narration Ibn Umar, in which he says,

Allah's Apostle said: Islam is based on (the following) five (principles):

  1. To testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and Muhammad is Allah's apostle.

  2. To offer the (compulsory congregational) prayers dutifully and perfectly.

  3. To pay Zakat (i.e. obligatory charity).

  4. To perform Hajj (i.e. Pilgrimage to Mecca).

  5. To observe fast during the month of Ramadan.

(Sahih al-Bukhari, Vol. 1, p. 17).

By observing this hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari narrated by Ibn Umar, we can summaries five pillars of Islam in words, Witness, Prayer, Charity, Pilgrimage to Mecca and fasts of Ramadan. These are the fundamental obligations of a person who claims to be a Muslim.

Whoever enter in the arena of Islam, converts to Islam and accept Islam as religion and claims himself Muslim, must fulfill these five pillar in a manner Islam defines them, not in a manner one understand them. However, to enter in Islam the first pillar from the five pillars is required i.e. to bear witness or giving Shahadah. In the hadith of Sahih Muslim, Vol. 1, p. 25, Prophet Muhammad SAWW said,

If anyone testifies (sincerely from his heart) that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is His bondsman and His messenger, Allah immured him from Hell. He (Mu'adh) said: Messenger of Allah, should I not then inform people of it, so that they may be of good cheer? He replied: Then they would trust in it alone. (Sahih Muslim, Vol. 1, p. 25).
